Highlanders ..........(1) 1 Chapungu .............(1) 2 Highlanders' solitary goal came from Irvine Tinarwo in the 18th minute
CHAPUNGU gave themselves a confidence booster ahead of the start of the 2008 Premier Soccer League season when they beat Highlanders in a friendly soccer match played at Barbourfields Stadium before a crowd of about 1 000 yesterday. Highlanders' solitary goal came from Irvine Tinarwo in the 18th minute, while Chapungu's two goals came from Phillip Marufu in the 15th minute and the winner was hammered by Tererai Zinyowera three minutes from time. The match was a dull encounter, save for a few glimpses of brilliance by some individual players from both sides. Tinarwo, who had a good day in the park, was definitely the man-of-the-match as he impressed with his pace, ball control, dribbling and good sense of anticipation. He created space for others and looked dangerous in one-twos. While not an outright striker like Cuthbert Malajila, he could be more effective in a two-striker attack formation or on the wing. Meanwhile, Njube Sundowns were on the receiving end at Luveve Stadium losing 2-0 to an attacking Shabanie Mine in another pre-season friendly. Veteran Fetrigo Santiago and James Chitere were on target for the visiting miners. Sundowns fielded former Hwange, Railstars, Highlanders and Zimbabwe Saints veteran midfielder Charles Chilufya, former AmaZulu and Monomotapa man James Phiri and another former Highlanders player Thabani Moyo. Despite the loss, Sundowns could turn out to be one of the strongest teams this season as Moyo was paired with Evans Chikwayikwayi and Patrick Tom upfront in what could be the most lethal partnership in the league. - Chronicle
